 5 Ways to Stay Motivated

The hectic-ness of life can easily get in the way of living a healthy lifestyle and getting into a daily exercise routine. Between juggling a family, work, school, a social life, and sleep, exercise can easily start to slide onto the back burner.

This is something I had to deal with when I started a new job that was getting me up at 4am while going to nursing school. My daily workout routine soon vanished and my nights were spent in front of the T.V. It wasn’t until I realized that my pants wouldn’t fit that I realized that my health was being neglected.

 5 Ways to Stay Motivated

So how can exercise and fitness be made a priority while having a busy lifestyle?

Here are some tips that bring exercise off the back burner and to the front:

1.) Wake-Up Early

Once the alarm goes off in the morning I don’t even give yourself time to think about the snooze button. Hit the ground running immediately and you will never regret your workout at the end.

2.) Set a Goal

5 Ways to Stay MotivatedWhether it be a 60-day exercise plan or training for a half marathon, goals are a great way to force yourself into an exercise routine and keep your eyes focused on the end prize.

3.) Lunch Breaks

Lunch breaks are a perfect time to get in a half hour of exercise. No need to find a gym, get outside and start walking. If you don’t work in a great area for walking, hit up the stairs in your building… nothing raises a heart rate better than running up and down stairs!

Getting a group of co-works together is even better accountability! I remember always seeing a group of women from my alumni college out in the quad walking laps while laughing and talking with each other.

4.) Pack a Gym Bag

Not a morning person? Packing a gym bag in the car that sits in the front seat . . . a great reminder that you need to get to the gym.

5.) Lay out your workout clothes

I prefer to just wear my workout clothes to bed, but for those of you that are PJ people, laying out your workout clothes the night before is another great reminder and preparation for what is planned ahead with the alarm clock goes off.

While these tips can motivate and get one to the gym, sometimes Nike himself reigns over all in that, “Just Do It”

Question:

Are you placing your workout routine on the back burner?

How to do ensure that your workouts are a priority in your life?

I love that you wear your workout clothes to bed! Such a great idea!! I have no problems working out doing the week. It is the weekend that gets me! We often are running around and though I am being active, I am not getting the sweat session I know my body is craving! I def need to schedule some time for the weekends!

I wake up at 4:15 and get at least one workout in before I have to go to work. I also schedule workouts into my calendar just like a would a doctor’s appointment. I’ve also been known to sleep in my workout clothes. It seems kind of funny, but does the trick when every second counts!

Excellent tips! I don’t work out in the conventional sense, but I’m happy with my level of activity. =)

Thanks for the comment on the herbs! It definitely wasn’t my typical type of post! Great tips- 4am will kill anyone’s early morning “pep”. I agree with not even thinking about it. It takes a long time to habituate, but half the battle is getting there! There are times where I am on the machine before I realize that I am actually “at the gym” working out! It makes it go by that much faster! I also remind myself that there are 24 hrs in a day, and I only spend 1 of them working out! It puts it into perspective.

NEVER NEVER EVER place my workouts on the back burner. I do them before the day starts & they are just part of life for me & have been for 25+ years….

Yes my workouts have been on the back burner and I’m not happy about it! I am getting up early TOMORROW morning to get back into it. I just let life get in the way sometimes!

Love your blog, def a new follower! I ensure working out is a priority by scheduling it into my day. If I can’t workout first thing in the morning I set a time in which I will and stick to it :)

I’m definitely a morning workout person. If I can’t sneak it in when everyone is still asleep, then it doesn’t usually happen that day.

I know for me getting a workout out of the way earlier is the best thing I can do. Today is a prime example even. I tried to go to the gym for spin this morning…only to have someone steal my bike and the instructor claiming she had no way of determining who was there first (since the chick wouldn’t give it up!). I had to leave. Now my best intentions of getting a workout in probably won’t happen bec the end of the day I’m so exhausted and just don’t feel as into it. I’m going to try but I’m not as gung ho as I was this morning about it.

love the tips! i can definitely see the prep work helping to motivate.

i’ve barely ran in a month (because of my quad) but it’s usually no problem keeping my workouts a priority. i just don’t feel like me if i don’t workout, that’s enough of a reminder to keep me motivated :)

Great tips! I go as far as sleeping in my workout clothes so I make my 5am spin class. I would much rather prefer to work in the morning cause I do struggle with motivation at the end of the day!

During the school year (I’m a teacher) I get up most mornings of the week to work out, if I workout in the afternoon I always pack a bag to bring.

Great tips! For me it really is hard making myself get up immediately once my alarm goes off. So my alarm is on my cell phone, so when I set it, I put my phone across the room so I have to get up out of the bed and walk over to it in order to turn it off. Once I’m up I have no problem staying up.

Great tips! What has really helped for me is taking exercise classes through my college. I’m signed up for advanced aerobics and a killer core class. I’m also taking boot camp with the same instructor. This has really helped me get into an active mindset and motivated me to just get out there and exercise.

GREAT TIPS!!

I keep my workouts on the front burner and that means staying organized just as you suggest. It’s worth it, isn’t it?!
