Bikram Yoga

Namaste!

This is the language I’m starting to learn in my new Bikram Yoga class.

I had no idea what I was getting into when I signed up for Bikram Yoga last week. I mean, how hard would it be to hold different body poses for a minute of less?

Yoga Cat

… boy was I wrong! Between the sweat dripping off my body, to the drenched clothes, my heart jumping out of my body, and my weak muscles shaking, Bikram Yoga is one tough (but great) class. This morning I barely could get out of bed cuz my entire body is sore from my head down to my toes.

Would you judge me if I said I love this feeling?

Bikram Yoga is more than just a 90-minute session of a series of 26 poses in a 105-degree room.poses1 Bikram Yoga

It’s a great workout, de-stressor, and detoxor. These heart pounding, calorie-burning moves have so many benefits. It’s shocking!

Benefits of Bikram Yoga

  • bikram yoga1 Bikram YogaReshape your body
  • Reduce risk for sports injury
  • Reduce the effects of stress
  • Clear your mind
  • Tone and strengthen muscles
  • Increase balance and coordination
  • Increase energy

The heat used in Bikram Yoga is used as a healing tool to increase the immune system, detox the body, and enhance both internal and external body function.

  • Yoga Pose 243x300 Bikram YogaEach pose aids in enhancing the function of the skeletal, muscular, skin, circulatory, nervous, digestive, respiratory, endocrine, elimination, and mental systems of the body. Weight-loss

  • Camel Pose Bikram YogaMany people think that Bikram Yoga does not cause weight loss but rather water loss. While this may be partially true, Bikram Yoga increases the heart rate, warms up the muscles, and increases blood circulation causes a perfect combination of calorie burning and weight loss and muscle building.

Now that I’m addicted to Bikram Yoga and a huge advocate of it, I highly encourage you all to get out there and give it a try. Don’t worry about the heat, you can always take a little breather outside if you need to

I’ve only tried yoga via DVDs or On Demand from Fit TV. I have found that I prefer the ones that seem to be more active/dynamic. But I know I need the ones that are more meditative!!

  2. Erica Says:

Loveeeeeeeee bikram. I do it after I run races, makes my muscles feel so much better/not tight! Its super expensive though, so I only do it every once in a while

  3. Nicole @ Making Good Choices Says:

I LOVE yoga, but I haven’t done bikram yet. I didn’t know it was 26 poses… I did know that it’s HARD though. This summer I plan on taking a class to give it a try. I have found that my running has been easier and my flexibility has improved from doing yoga on a regular basis.

  4. Lisa Says:

ah! I want to try bikram yoga SOOO badly! I hear its awesome, intense & soo good for you all at once. what’s not to love!!

  6. Lily @ Lily's Health Pad Says:

I’ve never tried bikram. I’d like to. I never realized that each class is 90 minutes and includes the same poses eacht ime!

  7. eatmovelove Says:

I love that Cat pictures! Too cute! Haha – I have tried Bikram before – but honestly I think it’s overrated…it’s repetition of the same poses in a hot, hot room…if not in the room, you probably wouldn’t sweat. BUT – with that said, I’ll bite my tongue and say the first time I tried it I almost died and had NO balance…haha – and I haven’t done yoga since forever…since I got my certification…i obviously suck and have lost all sense of direction in life…great post though :)

  8. Averie (LoveVeggiesAndYoga) Says:

    love any posts about yoga!

ive been a teacher for 10 yrs…om shanti, love yoga!

fave poses are arm balances, inversions, backbends, and liftoff/hovering asanas :)

  9. FoodFitnessFreshair Says:

I love all types of yoga, although I’d have to say Bikram isn’t necessarily one of my favorites. I can’t get into the same spirit and energy flow with it being so hot. But any type of yoga makes me feel pretty great! I love all the inversion poses, like the headstand.

  10. Alycia @ FitnFresh Says:

ahh i’m so jealous!! i’ve been looking every where for bikram yoga around here and dude – nothing! *sigh* oh well, this just means you have to do it twice as much for me (:

I really want to go to yoga but there is no teacher in my little town, I occasionally try it at home but I have no idea if I’m doing it right!

  13. Chelsea @ One Healthy Munchkin Says:

I really want to try Bikram but I haven’t yet because I can’t find a friend who wants to go with me. But who says I can’t take a class alone? :D

  14. katherine Says:

I’m a yoga teacher and have tried Bikram out a few times, but I am not able to tolerate the heat at all! Also – I am a prop lover and think it’s really important to modify poses based on your individual needs. That’s not something they do in Bikram. Having said that – even though its not for me, I think it’s great that it brings people into the practice of yoga! There are so many types of yoga out there it’s fun to give them all a try and find what fits for you! Namaste! (my fav definition of that is “the beauty in my honors the beauty in you!”)

  15. Erin At The Healthy Apron Says:

What an adorable cat picture! lol I love yoga! I definitely noticed a huge difference in my arms after I started practicing!

  19. Heather @ Health, Happiness, and Hope Says:

I’ve personally never tried Bikram, but I have been doing Baptiste for quite some time now, and the two are somewhat similar as far as the practicing environment. I’ve always been a tree pose girl, although I’m really starting to like warrior binds as well! Every day I’m at a different place and find a connection to a different pose! :)

I randomly told my husband this morning “Namaste” and he looked at me weird. LOL. I use to practice yoga regularly but haven’t been in awhile! I miss it. I currently move to the Houston area in Texas and I was actually looking at a Bikram studio to visit. It’s extremely expensive!! But I could try out a class for $20 if I want to. I may just do that. I’ve heard great things about Bikram yoga and I’m glad you confirmed it more! :)

  21. Tina Says:

Hey! Thanks for checking out my blog. I look forward to reading more of yours and I hope to continue to see you around.

I have never tried Bikram yoga since I just take yoga classes at my gym. I do want to get involved in a yoga studio eventually and try the Bikram out. It definitely sounds tough and like a great workout. I was surprised at the calorie burn of it!

  22. Meegan Says:

Thanks for stopping by my blog! It has been a good week. It definitely feels great to be fueling the body with good food and good moves. You’re inspiring me to check out yoga again. I haven’t tried Bikram before – sounds like it would be worth the sweat!

I’ve never done Bikram yoga, but I would LOVE to! Unfortunately my gym doesn’t offer it :/ But, I have started doing yoga over the past few months, and it has quickly become my favorite form of exercise. I’ve noticed an incredible difference in my strength, flexibility, and (most importantly) mental/emotional wellness! :)

  25. Fattie Fatterton Says:

My gym does not offer it, but we do have 60 minute Yoga classes in a room set at 85 degrees. I started Yoga back in March and was hooked after just one class. Now I am taking 5 classes per week. So glad that you are enjoying it!!

  29. Mary Says:

I am a Bikram beginner on day 13 of a 30 day challenge (30 times in 30 days). The heat takes a couple of classes to get used to. I am already feeling more toned, I’m sleeping like a baby and my skin is clearing up. I’m starting to get the “bikram glow”! Definately recommend it!

  30. Alissa Says:

Wow- this sounds really interesting. Regular Yoga in a normal temperature room is hard enough for me! lol :)

  31. kate Says:

I love the heat of hot yoga but Im not a fan of the standard 26 Bikram poses. Im much more a fan of a faster, power yoga. Sometimes the sweating really gets to me, especially when it drips in my eyes or ears! Ekk!

  32. hbobier @ Basil Vodka Says:

I’ve never done bikram yoga but I’ve done a beginner “hot yoga” in a room that’s 90 degrees. I’m glad to hear you love it so much!

  33. Kristen (swanky dietitian) Says:

I am a huge fan of yoga but have yet to try Bikram. I really should give it a try.
Thanks for stopping by my blog!

  34. kelsey@snackingsquirrel.com Says:

i love bikram/hot yoga so much! i never enjoyed regular yoga very much but when i tried hot yoga iwas hooked. and now i have a greater appreciation for unheated yoga sessions too… or as i like to call it ‘cold yoga’ lol.

  35. mary Says:

oh my god I love hot yoga! I feel so clean and energized when I Leave

  36. Cammy@TippyToeDiet Says:

I’ve heard of Bikram Yoga, but so far have felt no burning (hah!) desire to try it. :)

I love any of the warrior poses and child’s pose. My back loves child pose, especially.

  37. Sarena (The Non Dairy Queen) Says:

I have not tried bikram yet, but I really want to! I do believe it is good for you! I have really started to do different types of workouts because I think it benefits your body in different ways. I love the kitty yoga! That was cute.

  38. Jamie Says:

I’ve never heard of Bikram Yoga, it sounds intense but I think it would feel amazing. I will have to check out if there are any classes in my area, I’d love to try this out!

  39. Erica @ Fashion meets Food Says:

Looooove Bikram! I use to do it constantly and then when I moved I was unable to find a place that had classes so I am really missing it! I can’t do a lot of those poses in it i am just not that flexible!

    xo

  40. Heather Says:

wow those people are so bendy! No way i could do that!

  41. Megan @ The Oatmeal Diaries Says:

Ahh I just tried hot yoga yesterday! The room was 85 degrees, 105 sounds super intense. I loved it and want to go more often!

  42. Samantha Angela @ Bikini Birthday Says:

Thanks for stopping by my blog! I added you to my google reader.

I tried Bikram yoga twice and while I liked the intensity of the class I don’t think I could do it all the time because it is the exact same sequence EVERY class. I like to try new poses, and I like vinyasa.

  43. Adriana Says:

Love it! Just started it in June and had never tried any kind of yoga before. I have worked myself up to 3 times a week…and at 5:30 in the morning (the room is way less hot/humid). Hoping that I can keep it up!

  44. Nancy Simpson Says:

I am almost 60 years old, have knee injuries, foot problems….etc. I tried Bikram and first thought it may not be for me due to my injuries. I found out just the opposite! I have only gone about 7 times, but I already feel much less pain in my knees and feet due to the flexability. I can’t say enough good things…
