… I have successfully made my very first green monster smoothie

Thanks to all you that commented and gave me such wonderful advice on making these smoothies.

I went out that night and bought some fresh spinach!

Green Monster Smoothie: Round TwoTop Advice: Fresh Spinach! Me being the cheap person that I am thought I would save money on buying frozen spinach. Well, if you like to chew your smoothies, then go for it. For me, I’m all about the puree!

And really, fresh spinach isn’t expensive, so I pretty much wasted my time on the frozen spinach.

I thought this morning I would attempt the Virgin Green Monster Smoothie Recipe from the Green Monster Movement.

5530 512775787441 139000229 30513431 6383729 n 150x150 Green Monster Smoothie: Round Two- 1 frozen banana

- 1 cup Almond Milk

- 2 cups spinach

- 6 ice cubes

- A dash of Stevia

The recipe doesn’t call for sweetener, but I have a huge sweet tooth so I added this in at the end.

OMG! This stuff is amazing. Seriously people, if you haven’t tried it, you need to. I promise you that you won’t taste the spinach… unless you are like me in round one and aim for a chewy smoothie with frozen spinach. There are just some things you can’t go cheap on icon smile Green Monster Smoothie: Round Two

Question: What type of Green Monster Smoothie did you make this morning?

Looks great! I HAVE TO make one; it’s been on my “to do” list way to long… :)

9 .escamilla. August 13, 2009 at 12:49 pm

haha nice, ruth! i’ll have to try this soon.
at least you can use the frozen stuff for casseroles or something :)

10 Lainie August 13, 2009 at 1:19 pm

I made one this morning but I didn’t put a banana in, and it was kind of a disaster. The banana adds so much sweetness…don’t ever leave it out!!! Normally though, I love the green smoothies. Just today was NOT my day!

Green monsters are BOMB!!!! Try some almond butter for extra protein, coconut oil (or extract–even almond extract would be good!) I mixed pineapple and blueberries in with my regular banana & spinach. :)

12 Christina @ MINDFUL LIVING August 13, 2009 at 1:51 pm

this morning i made a cup of vanilla unsweetened almond milk, scoop of naturally more PB, spianch, frozen banana- my favorite combo by far i just love it!!

13 Ann August 13, 2009 at 1:54 pm

I have been making them all the time, pretty similar recipe. Let me tell you, don’t add strawberries and nothing else, just doesn’t taste right. I’m still searching for the perfect one too to post, but I’m glad to see your version:) Oh, and I also found it’s easiest to peel banana first and break in half before freezing…

I can never get mine to come out that green! It looks so pretty! I think it’s because I use blueberries and raspberries!!

15 Rickyrae August 13, 2009 at 2:58 pm

Now that you’ve worked out the ‘bugs’ in the recipe, I may give have to give this one a try….

Did it taste at all like a pureed salad? Or was it just like a smoothie that happened to be neon green?

16 Erica August 13, 2009 at 3:08 pm

Yum! Love these!! I agree fresh spinach and inclusion of a banana are KEY!

17 Fitness Surfer August 13, 2009 at 3:45 pm

That actually looks minty and delicious. I was blending my salads for a while because i struggle with chewing vegetables in general…OK i struggle with vegetables all together. Although mine never looked that good. I will totally try that veggie drink.

Thanks for visiting my site.

As much as I want to try this, I have to admit that I am having a hard time getting past the sound of the ingredients. I know, it is all mental, but it is the truth.

22 Beth August 13, 2009 at 6:58 pm

yum! I need to make more green monsters!

23 Jo August 13, 2009 at 10:52 pm

I have yet to find almond milk where I live. Guess that means I don’t have to try one? (ducking and running for cover. lol)

24 brandi August 14, 2009 at 7:52 am

I didn’t make one this morning, but I love adding almond butter to them, too!

25 Natasha - 5 Star Foodie August 14, 2009 at 9:58 am

26 Robin August 14, 2009 at 5:15 pm

Haha, that’s hilarious!! I used frozen spinach in mine and was kind of wondering what the hell was wrong with it. Good to know :)

Hey, thanks for stopping by my blog the other day. I love your blog, great tips and info! I had wondered about buying the frozen spinach for GMs but had never tried it, so glad to know that fresh is best! And glad that you finally made a GM that you loved, they are such a good breakfast, I have at least three a week!

I don’t know if I’ve been living under a rock or what, but I hadn’t heard about Green Monsters until I read your post today. I think I’m going to try it! The color is beautiful, and what a great way to get in some fruits and veggies. I’ve been making smoothies in the morning for breakfast, so this couldn’t have come at a better time.

I think I’m going to hit the grocery store today to get the “supplies.”

I just made this recipe and it is SO good! This is the first time I’ve heard of anything like this so thank you for introducing me to green monsters, I think these will become a regular in our home!

i’ve never had one either, but heard about them.. on pretty much everrrryone’s blog. good to hear you tried one, unbiased, and stil liked it. i may just have to join the “clique” of green monsters :)

32 Melissa October 16, 2010 at 11:43 am

Ok so I’m doing WW and I heard about the green monster. I must say I love love love it! If you have not given it a try go for it! It won’t hurt you. Had my first this morning and let me tell you there will be plenty more to come. I have a hard time getting in my fruits and veggies so this is perfect for me and anyone like me. And it does not taste like a blended salad. You can’t even taste the spinach believe me everyone! I like mine purple-I add in blueberries and a banana to the basic recipe.

why does the banana need to be frozen, not fresh ?
